Prenatal and postnatal immune support during COVID-19

With an increase in COVID-19 spreading across the globe, it is important that we understand the nature of this virus; and how we can support our pregnant and postpartum mothers during this time. The information on this blogpost also applies for anyone else that is looking to enhance their immunity.

What we know about COVID-19 so far.

The most at risk population are the elderly, people who suffer from chronic illness, or those on immune suppressing medication, and our front line healthcare workers.

Over 75% of those confirmed with Coronavirus will experience moderate to no symptoms, and over 90% will recover from the infection.

Here are our best tips to support the immune system:

Eat nourishing foods

Try to eat a nutrient dense diet by including unprocessed whole foods. We want to eat nutritious warm cooked foods to replenish the body after pregnancy. Bone broths, miso and hearty soups are great examples. We need ample clean, hormone free/ grass fed animal protein to nourish the changing of connective tissues for pregnancy and postpartum.

Avoid sugar

Excess sugar and refined starches can cause low grade inflammation and suppress your immune system.

Probiotics

Probiotics help heal your digestion to have a good immune system. Studies have shown probiotics also lessen the chance of your child having eczema.

Prenatal DHA

Prenatal DHA is a great supplementation for baby’s brain development and growth during pregnancy. Furthermore the omegas 3s help support lactation and anxiety.

Hot water, lemon & Manuka honey

Manuka honey is a great sugar alternative as it is an antibiotic and antibacterial that is sourced naturally. Manuka honey not only soothes your throat, it also supports the gut, and boosts immunity. Add this into your oatmeal, or tea!

Zinc

15g of Zinc can help boost immunity for colds and flus. Zinc supports our white blood cells to help us fight against infections and diseases. Zinc is also good for cell growth and the production of DNA in baby.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is recommended at 1000mg for pregnancy doses. Vitamin C is focuses on enhancing the innate and adaptive immune system

Chinese herbal formula

Yu Ping Feng San is one of Chinese Medicine’s favorite immune boosting herbal formula against bacteria and viruses. It contains astragalus that is an adaptogen.
