How to treat Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a chronic condition that is difficult to identify and treat. Apart from eliminating the overabundance of bacteria that is collected in the small intestine, one also needs to follow a strict SIBO diet. Furthermore, the treatment includes continually treating the root cause of your SIBO, as well as restoring and maintaining gut health.

Upon confirmation from a SIBO Breath Test, the first step our Meta Health practitioners take is a vigorous SIBO elimination protocol - you have the option of antibiotics or herbal antibiotics course. In addition, based on additional diagnostic testings (GI Effects, NutrEval, IgG/ IgE Food Sensitivity Test) - the treatment plan would include addressing individual food sensitivities, gut dysbiosis, nutritional insufficiencies and gut inflammation. Finally, ongoing maintenance and modification of care takes place to prevent reoccurance.

Elimination Stage (6 - 8 weeks)

  • Run GI Effects & SIBO Breath Test to confirm diagnosis

  • Elimination of bacteria (herbal antibiotics or Rifaxim and/ or Neomycin)

  • 2-3 days after completion of herbs run SIBO test again to confirm effectiveness

  • Identify the root cause with acupuncture, cupping, natural supplements & herbs

  • SIBO specific diet - Low FODMAP diet or paleo or specific carbohydrate diet with meal spacing every 4-5 hours, overnight 12 hr fasting, increase in water intake

Healing Stage (1 - 3 months)

  • NutrEval, Food Sensitivity Test to determine nutritional deficiencies & food sensitivities

  • Regular abdominal and visceral manipulation to promote bowel motility

  • Continue treating the root cause, nutritional deficiencies, gut dysbiosis and inflammation with acupuncture, cupping, natural supplements & herbs

  • Adjustment of diet based on food sensitivities

  • After 2 months, reevaluate, run SIBO test again

Maintenance stage (ongoing)

  • Meta Health comprehensive wellness panel to evaluate and address health holistically

  • Reintroduce fermentable carbohydrates, continue anti-inflammatory diet

  • Continue maintenance treatment with acupuncture, abdominal massage, cupping, natural supplements & herbs
